Hair Dyeing Tutorial

Materials Needed:

  • Clean hair (best with a light base color, such as light blonde, ash blonde, or white)
  • Hair dye for synthetic hair (DO NOT use dye containing bleach)
  • Disposable gloves, old towel, dye comb/brush
  • A basin of warm water (around 40°C), shampoo (preferably color-protecting), conditioner
  • Hair dryer (cold air setting only)

Steps:

  1. Lay the hair flat Spread the hair out flat on a table (place an old towel underneath), with the hair ends facing outward. This ensures the most even color application.
  2. Apply the dye Wear disposable gloves. Start applying from the ends upward toward the roots. Work quickly.
    • For a lighter result: leave on for 20–30 minutes
    • For a normal/standard color: leave on for 1–2 hours
    • For very deep/intense color: leave on for 3–6 hours
  3. Wrap to keep warm After fully applying the dye, wrap the entire hair in aluminum foil or plastic wrap (like wrapping a rice dumpling). This helps the color develop more evenly and penetrate better.
  4. Speed up the process (optional) During waiting time, you can use a hair dryer on the cold air setting and blow for 10–15 minutes to accelerate color uptake. (Never use hot air!)
  5. Rinse When time is up, rinse with warm water (~40°C) and a small amount of gentle/color-protecting shampoo. Gently massage until the water runs clear. Do not rub or scrub hard, as this may cause the human hair to tangle. Finally, rinse once more with conditioner to leave the hair soft and smooth.
  6. Dry Air dry naturally or use a hair dryer on the cold setting. Never dry in direct sunlight (it will cause fading).

Tips:

  • Black, dark brown, and wine red are the easiest colors to achieve — almost 100% success rate.
  • For cool tones like gray, smoky blue, ash brown, etc., it’s highly recommended to start with a light gray or white base hair. Dyeing cool tones on a regular light blonde hair will usually turn greenish.
